Cancer Development in the Stump of Stomach after Particl Gastrectomy for Benign Ulcer Disease

Abstract
Gastric cancer following operation for peptic ulcer disease has been considered rare but many cases were reported since Balfour, 1922.
It has been considered as a late complication of partial gastrectomy earlier, but now considered as a disease entity.
Today, definition is generally accepted that a stump cancer is a cancer that has developed in the gastric remnant after partial gastrectomy is carried out, for benign disease, at least 5 years before diagnosis.
Symptoms of a stump cancer are vague and the diagnosis is often delayed, because they resembled recurrent ulceration.
Fiberoptic endoscopy of suspicious areas is the most accurate diagnostic approach.
All patients who had peptic ulcer operation, especially partial gastrectomy, require careful long-term follow-up.
The prognosis is poor, but surgical intervention, if feasible, sohuld be done.
We experienced a gastric stump cancer patient at St. Family Hospital, Catholic Medical College.
The patient was a 56-year-old Korean man who had Biliroth-¥± subtotal gastrectomy for benign gastric ulcer 5 years ago at this hospital.
We present this gastric stump cancer patient with review of literatures.
